Introduction
This day, December 1st, 1859, militant abolitionist John Brown awaits his execution. He would be hanged by the Commonwealth of Virginia the next morning for treason, murder and insurrection. Stonewall Jackson, John Wilkes Booth and Walt Whitman who wrote a number of poems about John Brown were among other people at the hanging.
