Mental health really does come from your sense of self, which no medicine or therapy can help you access. Blood sugar is often where I like to start with my patients in anxiety because it's such a quick win. Our modern diets are built on a foundation of refined carbohydrates and coffee drinks that are secretly milkshakes and rosé all day. When our blood sugar crashes, our body has a stress response. We release cortisol and adrenaline. That cues the liver to break down starch so we can restore our blood sugar to normal levels.
