The Siga Toxin in E. Coli
The Siga toxin or Siga-like toxin, it's the same toxin that's produced by another bacteria, Siga-la. This is what results in the bloody stools that you see in entero hemorrhagic E. coli infections. These bacteria tend to colonize in your large intestine and your colon. When they release this toxin, they can cause perforation of your intestine. They can cause necrosis. So they can cause your colon to actually die in places.
