The Importance of Punishment
Punishment is best understood as a practice of imposing some deprivation or hardship to prevent harm for wrongdoing and to encourage law abiding conduct. I'm not myself convinced that involuntary labor can never be a legitimate punishment for a crime. Prisons in theory are supposed to prevent or reduce crime in three ways, aren't they? Usually said deterrence, incapacitation, and rehabilitation.
