How to Calculate Latitude by Comparison

The night sky has plenty of clues for a mariner to find his latitude. The most obvious one is the star polaris, a very bright star in ursa minor. As that's increasingly used for direction, mariners noticed it was higher in the sky when they were further north on the earth and lower in the sky if they were further south. So they started to use it for a position finding as well, or a sort of position keeping.
