A group of 30 athenian patriots set out from thebes in the dead of winter with weapons and food. They travelled about 30 miles to an old fort perched on a hilltop in the rugged wilderness surrounding athens. The next day, by cover of night, those 70 determined men stormed the hill top fort and killed the guards they had set there. And so within a month or two, the number of rebel fighters at the fort has grown to 700. By this time, the 30 have actually rounded up and forced a large number of disgruntled, democrat sympathizing citizens to re locate to the piraeus,. Athens's harbor town is now facing a full blown civil war.
