Labour has been, in one way, going with the political win ever since 1945. The idea that mass unemployment is not only a tragedy but something which is intolerable and must not be allowed to happen. And what has changed by 1979 is that that is no longer the case. In some ways, this is the story of the left's version of what should follow the post-war consensus. It's just not one that people want to listen to.
