The Evolution of Genomes and Bacteria

When I was in school for paleontology, the takeaway about how to survive a mass extinction was, you know, you don't specialize. That if you want to survive, that you become a generalist. And it's interesting that even in just the evolution of particular genomes and bacteria you see the same sort of thing. It does seem like we are empowered to pursue hyperspecialization by the same biophysical constraints that make this planet more and more susceptible to perturbations.
