The Greatest Period of Upward Mobility in the United States

In the decades following World War II, progressive policies helped to create the largest middle class in the history of any nation. But African-American citizens were often deliberately excluded from or last in line for the benefits on offer. The National Labor Relations Act, FHA mortgage policies and the GI Bill inaugurated nothing short of a generational leap in upward mobility for the majority of white workers.
