I don't think people can get very stuck on the historical reality of these stories. The value of these myths is not to tell us anything particularly precise or exact about misty, misty time. Their job is to tell us something about ourselves now. I mean, that is how t they were invoked at the moment t they were being written. And a ew described beautifully with the cordelia, the story and how important it was politically in that moment. It's like that with the arthurian legend. You know, i don't really care whether arthur existed. What is fascinating is how this figure took on, in fiction, a life of its own.
Art historian, printmaker and writer Dr Amy Jeffs is joined in conversation by author and journalist Charlotte Higgins to discuss how ancient myths and legends are constantly retold and reimagined by new storytellers. Amy Jeffs' book, Storyland: A New Mythology of Britain, is a retelling of 30 medieval myths and legends. Charlotte Higgins' book, Greek Myths: A New Retelling, provides a refreshed narrative by focusing on the perspective of women in the stories of Ancient Greece, with illustrations from Turner Prize-winning artist Chris Ofili.
