The Importance of Artful Deviation in the Humanities
In the humanities, if you're doing them correctly, then to say something genuinely new in the humanities is just far harder than it is in the sciences. To take one exact Kafka, right? It's almost not enough to have read every single word Kafka wrote and understood it. And yet there's an idea in poetics Aristotle calls artful deviation when you say something unexpected like Milton's blind mouths. That doesn't make any grammatical sense, but you know what he means by a phrase like blind mouths, right?
