You acquire the sense and t ability to do that by being on the battle field for 30 years with this constantly in front of you. That's assuming that you don't short change this process somewhere along the line, and an awful lot of people do. Instead of acquiring patience over the years, they just become compromises. Compromise looks like patience, but its the opposite of patience.
