Jefferson takes stands against slavery in his younger life, but then again, he's also a slaveholder. How does he resolve that into his notions of American exceptionalism? He tries to put a really harsh denunciation of slavery into the Declaration of Independence. As president, he does very little. In retirement, by the time we get to the Missouri crisis, he really does the worst thing of all.
