Machiavelli and the Prince
Machiavelli was involved in political life in Florence, but also fell on hard times. He ended up in exile as part of the constant changeover of power that was always going on there. His most famous piece of writing is the Prince - an analysis of how to acquire and retain power. It's notable for considering that question as distinct from questions of morality.
