The accusations of witchcraft that were made in Manningtree were the start of a set of witch trials. Matthew Hopkins and his associate John Stern traveled from place to place investigating reports of witchcraft inspecting women's bodies for marks, watching suspected witches and in some cases swimming them which was throwing them into the water sometimes tied up to see if they would sink or float.
