The Black Church Tradition

Powell: Historically, have been forced into our own communities because of legal segregation, raceism. So i feel like it was within that context that we developed what has become the black church tradition and practices. And so there was no shame there, because it was literally indigenous to our community. Up rose up out of our communities and our experiences. It wasn't until there was more scrutiny by white people through all kinds of means, through desegregation, through the internet and the digital age, that it probably even crossed our minds.
