Canberra's Self-Censorship
No sanctions have been imposed on Chinese officials over human rights abuses in Xinjiang. The Albanese government decided not to approve any additional Confucius institutes, but stopped short of shutting down the 12 that exist in Australian universities. There's no guarantee China will fully live for all those trade restrictions or totally normalize diplomatic and political contact. And so I think there is a certain amount of fear and trepidation in Canberra that we have to play nice with China to a certain extent.
