The individual in history has always tried to achieve certainty about the future. In modern times, it is the academic students of politics who have taken over the role once enjoyed by the oracles at delphi. They too have often been disappointed. But as the oxford historian a j p taylor once said, we learned from history not to make the old mistakes and that leaves us free to make new ones instead.
