If your airpods are connecting while they're in the case, that would tell me, as someone not touching them, i to look for two things. Visually inspect all of that. You might have like a piece of tissue in there. In fact, a little piece of anything would cause both of these problems. And b, it might be enough to push the lid open and keep the lid from closing.
