China was the main supporter of the Khmer Rouge regime from the outside. But it was support born more out of perceived necessity than out of affection. The Pol Pot regime was seen by China as a necessary counterweight to Soviet and Vietnamese influence in the region. Chinese officials became increasingly worried that Pol Pot's regime was either going to collapse or would invite an unwanted war with its larger neighbor Vietnam.
