Hemingway's the Iceberg Theory
Hemingway seems deliberately to be leaving those open. When Hemingway uses that iceberg theory, when he omits things for the reader to kind of fill in, step one is to notice that he is omitting something. Why would the couple name the procedure that they're about to, that they're considering? And once you start asking those questions, you begin to penetrate the story and the characters.
