In 1934, after 20 years of occupation, the US left Haiti and the nation was independent once more. The US still continued to control Haiti's public finances for decades - taking 40% of Haiti's national income to service debt repayments to the US itself and France. And the amount they eventually paid was equivalent to $20 and $30 billion in today's money.
