Listening to America

CHAPTER

The Rise and Fall of George III

I was born a British subject, a British citizen. I fully expected to live my entire life as a British subject. We did not want to rebel from Great Britain. But George III, who was the king and the British Parliament sort of pushed us so hard that eventually we felt that we had no choice as freedom-loving people but to overthrow that government. And believe me, that's a very grave thing to do. Think of yourselves growing up in the United States. What would it take for you to become so disenchanted with your government that you would declare independence from it? And that's exactly what happened in 1774 but particularly in 1776.
