John's Decision to Collaborate With Philip Augustus
Philip Augustus sees John as weak, pathetic and easily led. After a lifetime of arm wrestling with Henry II and Richard, here is a Plantagenet he reckons he can consistently get the better of. Philip is 100% right, so throughout 1193, while Richard was in jail, he played along with John and that tactic paid off handsomely. Right up until the point that Richard was about to be released, John was handing over chunks of Norman territory to Philip in return for recognition of his right to rule what was left.
