The Kelp's Strategy for Harvesting Seaweed
The kelp have this whole strategy. They suck up all the nitrogen in December and January and February, while other organisms in coastal waters are mostly offline. And by the time the daylight and temperature gets back up in March, that's when the plankton and other creatures start chowing down. By that point, the kelp is set. So we can maximize that growth at the beginning of their life cycle so they can suck up those nutrients in a debt of winter.
