The mid-Atlantic accent had the advantage of being non-regional, but it was also unnatural. After World War II, more and more performers started to use their natural accents. Americans no longer saw themselves as the colonial offshoot of the British Empire. They now saw America as a world power in its own right with its own way of speaking.
