The Mach Independence Principle of Hypersonics
In the 1950s, NASA engineers figured out how to get a pointy nose on space shuttles. They found that by moving the shockwave off of the body and we create a really strong shock. The heating increases with the cube of your velocity. So it's pretty traumatic. One professor says things start melting at Mach 7.
