In 1851 and 1860, 990,000 Irish Catholics in the main arrived in America. That is 83% of every immigrant in America in that decade was Irish. You have to also be cognizant of reasonable people feeling upset and scared and threatened. Once you meet somebody from Africa, your perception changes. People don't feel that some crowd are getting a better deal. But the idea that the society and the economy will be made richer without immigrants for the average person is completely anathema.
