The lack of being structured as an atomic commit actually made the implementation slower. When you did a c v s up date, it would scan the entire directory tree to see whether this might have been changed since the date that you asked. The performance was so bad when signus solutions, when they wanted to cut a branch, they would announce at ahead of time. They would schedule the branching, because you didn't want anybody else committing while you were branching.
