The Liverpool Approach to 1v2 Isn't Working for Me
The Liverpool approach of pinning the opposition midfield narrow didn't really work for them last season. The idea of getting Alexander Arnold inside opens up a huge range of passing options if you're playing as a fallback. As soon as he's moving inside suddenly he has the option of playing those penetrative passes through the middle which is something that the Liverpool were missing as well. I read a piece recently by Lork and Reese who calls this role the pendulum pivot so this idea that you're going to invert the fallback but rather than getting them inside the opposition block you’re going to have them sitting outside so they can still receive the ball facing down the field.
