There is work by herbert marsh that says that, for example, with students, if you end up going to a magnet school and all the kids are really bright, that's a bigger pond. I'm curious whether that same phenomenon has ever been studied in, let's say, kindness or charitable behavior. If i'm a selfish person and i start hanging out with a bunch of altruists, what happens there? One prediction might be that, just like everything else, money or status or ability, that is just going to make you feel worse. But i think the fact that we make the comparison spontaneously and without urging, i think it's true.
