What was before linoleum? What would people put on their floors? I mean, obviously, people put wood or stone on their floors and carpet. There was floor covering called floor cloth, which is a really vague term. The earliest reference to it in the UK, I think, is in 1736. It's an inventory of a place called Denham Hall that says that there's a large floor cloth.
