In 17th century Britain, everyone has a second wife or third wife because their first wife dies in childbirth. Most of them lose at least half of their children, either in stillbirths or in infancy. And you begin to realize why you had to have religious faith. There had to be some explanation as to why this was happening. Otherwise, life would just be insupportable.
