Barwell's Trial
Armed with a sawn-off shotgun, Barwell targeted cars in York. He was sent to prison for 16 years as a category B security prisoner. After just two and a half years his behaviour led to his reclassifications. By August 1992 he was reduced to Category D, the lowest possible security status. The official rules said he would not be eligible for home leave until the third of his sentence was complete in March 1993. But no time was wasted in letting him return home on resettlement licence - which also meant he could find work locally.
