I really learned my merchandising chops there because back then, a merchant did everything from plan to buy to market. I also learned about design and production there too. As retailers turn vertical, meaning that they designed and produced all of their own product, you needed to have specialists. So what happened to the industry was is that different disciplines had different leaders.
