Is There a Conductor in the Brain?
There's not this notion of like a homunculus, which is just a term for little man. So no, we cannot find a controller in some sense. But what we do find is that there are brain networks that seem to be driving how the other parts of the brain function. That's where this brain system that I happen to study in my lab, attention has a role to play. And some sense I talk about attention as the brain's boss. Because attentional networks really can recalibrate perception, thought, memory and even what we feel in our bodies are biased based on where attention flows.
