Al-Farrabi's Great Book of Music
Al-Farrabi's Great Book of Music is probably the most philosophically interesting work on music from the formative period. Characteristically his agenda here, or part of it, is to apply to music the understanding of the philosophical sciences he takes from the Aristotelian tradition. The dispute concerning the permissibility of music in Islam would continue for centuries to come.
