I'm drawn to people, but the characters as well, who are muddled. He finds himself ill-equipped and uncomprehending in the middle of a steam boiler. His father, my grandfather, was quite had that brutality. And so I think my father experienced things that are akin to what the character in the film experiences. When it gets disregulated, it will explode. It's there. There's real brutality in that relationship. And there's real tenderness.
