Sari Barmar: A Journey Through Burma

Sari Barmar is a 19th century text by an Indian Muslim about his journey through Burma. He describes learning the language from scratch and studying Pali, the classical religious language of Televada Buddhism in Burmese. The book makes him realize that there's actually this sort of polemical engagement with other cultures around the world. This isn't what we'd want to call secular anthropology but it does predate us as historians.
