The novel is written at a time when it seemed as if the Empire of Ice was advancing across the globe. Victor creates this new species and then doesn't let it exist as a species. So there is a question of what humanity owes to other species that I think is very central to the novel. It speaks to our current way of thinking about environmental ethics.
