Scientists believe woolly mammoths evolved about 400,000 years ago and they lived during what is known as the last ice age. They lived all over primarily in the northern parts of Asia, Europe and North America. Their numbers started declining a lot, probably around 14,000 or 12,000 years old. But they did overlap with early humans. So when I invited you to picture yourself running into one as you went about your day, 12,000 year ago, that wouldn't have been totally impossible.
