When you start thinking about it, economics is typically defined as allocating scarce resources. But there are some resources that are probably always going to be scarce in various ways. We could imagine genetically engineering ourselves to not want high social status and fancy stuff. It's just that most of us would say that perhaps missing a point here. Indeed, we want new things. Having a world that has new books or new inventions or new force of art seems to be a better world than a world where everybody's contacted the same book but having the same kind of book.
