The War Between the Persians and the Byzantines
The Eastern border remained the dominant foreign policy concern of the Byzantines. In some areas this saw a unifying effect, but in others it was very divisive. It's now time to look beyond the frontiers at the neighbours of the empire. The Sassanid Persians and their predecessors had traded victories fairly evenly with the Romans. But there was no possible suggestion that Anastasius would invade Persian territory to seek revenge.
