She had two and a half years of training as an astronaut candidate before she could officially become an astronaut. While in astronaut candadate, she did research in antarctica. And later she worked as an aquinaut in an underwater laboratory. She made it through her training, but it's one thing to be called an astronat and another thing to actually go into space.
