CHAPTER

The Interaction of Nation and Individual Laws

Deuteronomy consistently elevates the community over the individual. Is this simply a moral difference between us and them that, you know, it's hard for us to imagine a punishment that would affect a whole family directly as just punishment or just discipline? I think we do need to challenge ourselves on this. A rampant individualism in modern society is incredibly dangerous when we put ourselves at the centre rather than thinking about how our actions affect everyone around us. This is a message that i think we can really stand to hear from deuteronomy. And maybe that means we need to change our own actions to change the way that we're living in the world.
