During the 19th century there were numerous exceptions for libel, insults and obscenity. But in 1919 Oliver Wendell Holmes changed his mind about free speech. He argued that anti-war pamphlets should not have been convicted because of their 'clear and present danger' This has been described as the most important dissent in the history of the Supreme Court. It's a real argument for gerontocracy.
