The first Thanksgiving's more meat, deer, turkeys, oysters, mussels. Venison and seafood is a bigger part of the New England Thanksgiving menu than it is anywhere else in the country. Roasted flesh just tastes good on its own. And again, it's survival food. They had an abundance of meat, which is rare, but they weren't like coming up with new recipes.
