B s johnson was driven by a kind of class antagonism es much as anything else, i think. Publishing and writing in britain in the fifties and sixties was very mut dominated by the kind of oxbridge cartel. They looked down their noses at him a bit, and he felt this and resented it deeply. His first thing en jes through er, you know, when he started getting into adult education and went to burkbeck and then went to king's as a mature student, he discovered the novel. And that was like a thunderclap for him.
