I think it's so liberating and affirming to just find one other person who likes the same weird stuff that you do. And that's what this Chinese saying is trying to get at. We can't help but through mimises to internalize the positions of those around us. When those internalized values are aligned with our own, then we feel legitimized. But when those values disagree, then I think we feel a conflict within ourselves, a deep alienation. Gerard would say that surplus value really comes from others and not the objects themselves. Even the sacred, even the fundamental building blocks of gods are created by unanimity, bolstered through mimises.
