The Switch to High Fantasy
In the late 80s, D&D became more like a high fantasy game. The idea is that in dark grimer fantasy characters are basically normal people who happen to pick up a sword and go find loot. In High Fantasy versions, your characters are special in the world. There's lots of different little tricky bits with all these ideas of balance.
